I keep this in mind every time I’m on the gym floor.
What can I do as a coach to make my student move better? Are you looking for learning opportunities during each training session. I like to look for at least 5 technical coaching moments with each student during each session.
How can I make my student smile, laugh, and have a better time? Let’s face it, not everyone enjoys exercise. With that in mind, you have to do your best to put on a show that helps them get through their workout. This is definitely an art form that needs to developed over time.
How can I get more effort out my student so they feel like they accomplished more with me at their side than they could have done alone? I scan the gym floor constantly, looking for people operating deep within their comfort zone. This is our opportunity to check in with them and help move them forward. When they look distracted with low energy, I jump on that and challenge them enough to get their adrenaline pumping again.
How can I let a student know that their success makes me proud of them and makes me feel joy? Call it corny if you want to, but I am a high fiver! I want to pat them on the back, high five, fist bump, or whatever it takes to let them know I am proud of them.
I want my students to walk away feeling like they got more than they bargained for. I want them to think I’m a little crazy for caring that much. I want them to look forward to their next session. I want them to know I am authentically interested in them because of who they are as a human being rather than just a customer.
When I cover all these bases, I go to bed feeling like a huge success!
